Procedure
The completion of homework is the responsibility of the individual.
Pupils’ families will be responsible for determining their own levels of support for their children’s participation in homework activities.
Each teacher is responsible for determining the content of work set for homework with the practising of reading, spelling, basic facts and research skills (as appropriate to age of pupils). Ideally, homework should be confined to the following elements:
Reading practise
Basic maths (= - x +) practise
Spelling practise
Occasional, teacher-set activity related to specific topics
Notes:
ALL children are expected to undertake reading.
The other aspects (points 2 – 4) to be undertaken as appropriate to each individual’s age and stage of development.
The goal is to eliminate “worksheets”, maintain meaningful and valuable homework activity, and leave families and children free to undertake activities beneficial and appropriate to their own circumstances.
Each teacher is responsible for annually communicating to families and pupils their homework requirements.
Teachers will set, encourage and check homework but are not expected to chase up non-compliance to homework as this may reflect parental attitude rather than pupil reluctance – use teacher discretion.
Homework should be able to be completed within thirty minutes each week night.
Homework encourages excellent study skills and greater student achievement.
Students will be rewarded for completion of homework but penalties will not be incurred for non-compliance unless a term project is uncompleted.
