Candy Still Life

ARTIST STATEMENT

DESCRIBE

The setting of this artwork is the 3 pieces of candy- the sour patch kids, the lollipop, and the peppermint- and it doesn't have a setting. The candy is just kinda floating in space. I made this artwork using graphite, charcoal and india ink. I chose to draw this because the assignment was to use charcoal and ink to draw candy, and those candies either looked the most interesting to draw or they were candies that I particularly like.

ANALYZE

This artwork uses selective focus, because the most space taken up by candy is the center near the lollipop and corner of the sour patch kids bag, so your eyes are drawn to there. The project evolved a lot because originally I wasn't going to use ink at all. Although it was encouraged, we had to use charcoal, but the ink part was optional. At first I thought that it looked good with just the charcoal, but then I added a tiny bit of ink to add just a little splash of color, and then I ended up using ink on pretty much the whole piece.

INTERPRET

This artwork has no story or meaning, however, it can relate to my life because I LOVE candy, especially sour patch kids. I feel like this artwork could be stronger if I added some shading to the lollipop wrapper, and maybe if I practiced using ink and charcoal more, because I don't ever use those materials normally.
