Surfaced Clay Sculpture

Theo, 6"x12"

ARTIST STATEMENT

INTERPRET

The story of this is that this bunny is hopping around my friend’s house. This relates to my life because my best friend’s have a pet rabbit named Theo, and I painted this bunny to look like him.

DESCRIBE MATERIALS

This piece was made with clay and acrylic paint. I first used the clay to form the shape of the rabbit, and then it sat in the school for a while to dry and was later fired in a kiln. Some time later I picked it up, I then painted it with acrylic paints to give it the black spotted pattern and some features on the eyes, nose, and ears.

DESCRIBE PROCESS

For this piece I focused on value, with the stark contrast between the black and the white in the fur, as well as shape. This project did not evolve throughout the process. My next steps would be to work on improving my skills in making figures with clay. I am more used to using Sculpey to make figurines, so having to make it completely hollow was challenging and led to the rabbit looking more lumpy than I was hoping for.
