ARTIST STATEMENT
INTERPRET
The story of this is that this is a project for an art class, illustrating some of the principles of design. This relates to my life because I am in an art class creating this diptych to represent certain elements of design (such as movement, line, pattern, and shape).
DESCRIBE MATERIALS
This piece was made with a black washable marker and a white gel pen. For this project I wanted to play around with positive and negative space, so I decided not to use any color. I colored the lines and background with the black marker and added extra details with the white gel pen.
DESCRIBE PROCESS
I experimented with patten, shapes, space, movement, and line in this piece. Since the objective was to use the principles of design, I tried to incorporate many of those elements into this diptych. The top one focuses on shape and pattern, while the bottom focuses on movement and line, and both of these play around with space. This project did not evolve through the process. My next step might be to clean up the bigger white spaces in my art. I tried my best to keep it clean, but since the marker was washable it smeared when my hands got clammy. As you can see in the after photo, after being given more time in class I tried to go back in with more white gel pen and up the contrast on the top design, but it still didn't end up being quite as opaque as I had hoped, because the black underneath was just too dark. Also, on the bottom one I tried to cover up some of those smears with the white gel pen, but it didn't cover them up completely and turned them into a weird grayish-blue color and blended them out.
