SWEET SEA HAG

5.5"x7.5"

INTERPRET

The story of this artwork is that this sea monster really loves sweets, especially cookies. She makes fish bring cookies to her underwater sea cave for her to eat, and sits on top of a pile of cookies (snickerdoodle, chocolate chip, and macadamia nut). This project relates to my life because I also love cookies (who doesn’t?) and I am a swimmer, so I really resonate with this sea monster.

DESCRIBE MATERIALS

This artwork was created using colored pencils. I tried to keep it more on the pastel side of the color pallete, and I also stuck to blue/green/yellow hues.

DESCRIBE PROCESS

I experimented with color and balance in this piece. I wanted it to be soft looking with the colors, to not make the sea hag seem like a scary monster. I also wanted the bubbles and floating cookies in the background to feel balanced on either side of the sea hag. My project did not evolve much throughout this process. My next step might be to color the background to be more uniform. There is some white space showing through the colored pencil streaks, which could have been avoided. I might also outline the monster in ink pen (very thin lines however) to make her pop against the background more, since the colors are very similar.
