Overview:
Kahoot is a fun, interactive game to collect formative data! Students answer multiple choice questions within a set time frame. The quicker they answer, they more points they earn if they answer the question correctly! If they do not answer a question correctly, no points are deducted from their score. However, no points are added either. Students play against each other to see who can earn the most amount of points.
The teacher can create their own game from scratch or find an already created game on the topic you are looking to assess using the Discover tool. The teacher can also decide to make the game live or assign the game for later. In the live session, students are playing against their peers in live time. The teacher is able to present their screen to the class using the project so students can compete against their peers for the most amount of points. The class is given a set amount of time (determined when creating the Kahoot game) to answer the question. If students are still thinking of the answer when the time runs out, then the game goes on to the next question. If all students answer the question before the time is up, then the game goes to the next question early. Prior to moving to the next question, the points earned for that question are shown on the board. When the game is over, the top 3 scores are shown on the podium, as well as the 2 next runner-ups are mentioned. If the game is assigned, students are still competing against one another, but may be playing at separate times. Kahoot is a fun way for students to review skills and for teachers to gather formative data.

Tips:
The teacher can choose to play the game live or assign it. By assigning the game, students can access the Kahoot asynchronously using the code or link. This can be useful even if you are in a live class because then students are able to move at their own pace. If a student answers questions more quickly, they are not waiting for the time to run out. If a student takes their time answering questions, then they don't feel pressured to rush.
The teacher can also choose to have students login using their real name or using a random name generated by the program. To choose the random name option, right before starting a new game, click "Friendly Nickname Generator" under Game Options. Students are able to spin the virtual wheel up to three times to select a a funny, friendly name that they would like to use. If the student has not selected a name by the third spin, then the name that the virtual wheel lands on will be their name.
Any name can be removed by the teacher prior to starting the game. If a student did not meet expectations when typing their name, or if they would like to change their name, simply click on the name that you would like to remove. Students can also use emojis when creating their names.
Kahoot can also be used for community building! You can create your own Kahoot games on fun topics, such as animals, sports, events going on in the world, or fun facts about peers in the class. You can also find Kahoot games that have already been created by other users by clicking on "Discover". Before clicking on a Kahoot game, you can see the number of questions in that game, as well as the number of people who have played it.
