Shadows

By Kathleen McGill

The sun has blinked his lasting stare

As clocks chime eight, he flees his throne

No light to shine, no moon to glare

And all the creatures remain unknown

The night is cold, it’s dim, it’s hollow

Though something still lurks within the dark

No rules to obey and no one to follow

They circle the leaves, the trees, the bark

They can’t be heard or can’t be seen

As nothingness is a place to hide

Their ears are sharp, their eyes are keen

There's no escape. Their realm’s too wide

They seize the night, they seize the day

But they will never cease to stay
