the yellow brick road is a lie

By Molly Caspar

it seemed like everyone told dorothy to follow the yellow brick road,

and she listened, while their own ideas they bestowed.

I know she must have wondered if it was the right path she took,

if there was a better way to get home, if only she looked.

but because everyone around her seemed so certain,

around this questioning, she drew a curtain.

maybe in her unique ideas, dorothy found displeasure,

because the frowns of others were harder to weather

than the dissatisfaction she would have within her heart

for being like everyone else, when deep down she was truly different, set apart.

and while so many had followed that road before her,

and it seemed like all the world was telling her what must occur,

the world is not always right,

and dorothy was the only one left with her decisions at the end of the night.
