Our aim is to enable and empower patients, carers and the public to contribute to research in a way that they feel most confident. To do this we need to support research staff to carry out high quality patient & public involvement in the delivery of NIHR research.
The NIHR's mission is to improve the health and wealth of the nation. Patients, carers and the public are integral to the way we do this. At East of England RRDN we feel that just as research should be embedded across the NHS and social care, so too should patient and public involvement.
Supporting the implementation and development of the Patient Research Ambassador initiative within the NHS Trusts
Gathering feedback from research participants around the region via the 'Participant in Research Experience Survey', (formerly known as the Patient Research Experience Survey) and patient stories
Providing learning and development opportunities for patients, carers, the public and staff e.g. Building Research Partnerships Programme
In 2022, our organisation set up an innovation grant to enable partner organisations to develop their innovative ideas for patient public involvement and engagement in their research.
In the first year we offered grants of up to £2,000 and had some very impressive outcomes from such a small amount of money. We have now built that into business as usual and offer PPIE grants of up to £3,500 per funding round. Each year, we have funded between 15 and 20 projects.
Projects needed to meet the following funding criteria:
improving research inclusion (equality, diversity and inclusion)
increasing research awareness (particularly amongst under-served groups)
improving access to research for patients and the wider community
The funded projects are varied; they include developing resources to provide more accessible information to a more diverse range of people, wide scale surveys, large-scale events, analysing demographic data, and targeting those who are least represented as research participants’.
Over the last two years we have given out funding to 50 projects, totalling £137,485 over three funding rounds. PPIE grants Awarded to Delivery Organisations, GP practices and a college resulted in many amazing projects.
Although data for this year are not yet available, the two previous grant rounds have funded the creation of new websites and resources, and have enabled over 900 people to learn about health and care research who would otherwise likely not have had the opportunity.
We're pleased to announce the launch of 'Getting Involved in Research!', our newsletter for patients and the public in the East of England region.
This newsletter is issued monthly and is packed with information about how patients, research participants and members of the public can get involved in research.
Please share this newsletter with anyone who is taking part in, or who has recently finished taking part in a study, so that they can stay informed about future opportunities at East of England RRDN.
If you would like a printable version of the newsletter, please email ann.rampling@nihr.ac.uk.
If you have anything you would like to promote to participants and members of the public, please let us know.
You can also sign up for the newsletter via the form below.
