The Participant in Research Experience Survey (PRES) consists of a number of questions aimed at assessing a participant's experience of taking part in health research in the region, using a scale which ranges from strongly agree to strongly disagree.
As you will be aware, the NIHR East of England RRDN began on Tuesday 1 October 2024. As part of the transition from the CRN to the RDN, network boundaries have changed, which means we welcome six more Trusts into the East of England.
The PRES programme of work has not changed, and partners are still asked to give out the survey to all participants who take part in NIHR portfolio studies. However, with the formation of the RRDN, there are a number of changes to site/survey links and where to go for support with the PRES.
The RRDN East of England PRES team consists of the following people:
Anne Kirby, Study Participation Inclusion Manager, e: anne.kirby@nihr.ac.uk
Ann Rampling, PPIE Administrator, e: ann.rampling@nihr.ac.uk
Find out why the PRES is so important, and how it can help your participants shape research in the future in the short film (2 mins long).
Please note that the printed fold and stick survey will continue to be used until December 2025. If you are new to the East of England, please continue to use the paper surveys you have in stock from your old LCRN. You do not need to make any alterations to the surveys, the data processing company is aware that your organisation is now part of East of England RRDN.
The paper fold and stick design includes a pre-paid return address. Completed paper surveys must be properly sealed and returned by post to the pre-printed address, central processing company for data input.
The following versions can be used (these have not changed):
Adult survey
Children & young people, 0-6 years survey
Children & young people, 7-11 years survey
Children & young people, 12-15 years survey
Visual impairment survey
Easy-Read survey
You can order printed paper surveys by emailing: ann.rampling@nihr.ac.uk
To date, the EoE SPI team have created study specific online PRES links and QR codes on request. Currently we are unable to create any new Study Specific surveys.
All existing links and QR codes for study specific PRES have been recreated for the RRDN. These were available from 1 October 2024..
If you are new to the East of England and have existing study specific online PRES links set up, they will need to be updated. Please let us know which studies you have them set up for by emailing ann.rampling@nihr.ac.uk.
All new study specific online PRES links and QR codes can be accessed through these spreadsheets:
We can add your site if there is an existing Study Specific Link, to submit your request to do this please use Request to add sites to study specific surveys form
We also have a standard adult and children’s online survey, for use with studies where a study specific online PRES has not been created.
Please note that the participant will need to be provided with the study name, number and site so that they can complete this themselves at the start of the survey.
You can use the links below:
RRDN EOE ADULT PRES ONLINE SURVEY 25/26 (or you can copy and paste this URL: https://forms.gle/muVJNC2eURCURRKX8 )
RRDN EOE CHILDRENS PRES ONLINE SURVEY 25/26 (or you can copy and paste this URL: https://forms.gle/PgB7dvxkzJHK5o1YA )
We will no longer be creating PRES Flyers for every study specific online PRES, as we have found they haven’t been used. For each study specific online PRES, we will provide a URL link and QR code which you can insert into an email, letter, flyer, poster and/or text.
If you do require a flyer for a specific study, please contact ann.rampling@nihr.ac.uk and we can create these on a case by case basis.
We have an East of England PRES dashboard to support you to access near to live results of the PRES for your organisation. This was relaunched on 1 October 2024 to include the organisations who are transitioning over to the East of England RRDN.
You can filter the results by Trust or by site (using a site code), so please ensure you include the correct site code on your paper surveys, before giving them to participants. You can also filter the results by quarter, by financial year, by specialty, by study and by question. To view the free text comments for questions 8 & 9 you must filter by study as well as by site and/or year.
You can access the dashboard using the links below.
This dashboard will include all organisations within RRDN East of England. If you notice an error on the dashboard, or you have a query, please email: ann.rampling@nihr.ac.uk
If you would like to access the national PRES dashboard to review PRES results here is the link: https://shorturl.at/WcV5k (you will require an NIHR email address to sign in).
This dashboard is managed by the RDN Coordinating Centre team and is a useful tool to look at results across the whole of England. Please be aware that the data is updated quarterly so there is a delay in accessing results.
The East of England RRDN runs a PRES Working Group, which is a group made up of PRES Leads from partner organisations. The meeting takes place bi-monthly and oversees the development and delivery of the PRES across the East of England region.
After each meeting, a PRES Update is sent to all PRES Leads for wider circulation. This includes:-
National and local updates given at the meeting
Answers to any questions raised in/outside of the meeting
PRES leads are welcome to share the meeting invitation to any of their team who they would like to attend. For more information about the PRES Working Group please email: ann.rampling@nihr.ac.uk.
We have developed 2 short online learning modules, which are available on NIHR Learn. We encourage all staff who are involved in supporting the delivery of PRES to complete these modules. Some Trusts have made these training modules part of core training for all new research staff.
Participant in Research Experience Survey (PRES): Delivering the Survey
Link to training on NIHR Learn: https://shorturl.at/Q3Dkr. This module explains how to deliver the survey to your participants, including when to give it out and methods for delivery.
Participant in Research Experience Survey (PRES): Responding to the Results
Link to training on NIHR Learn: https://shorturl.at/Bbgl1. This module explains how you could respond to the results of the survey and includes a guide to getting the best out of the PRES Dashboard.
Who should I give the PRES to and how often?
PRES should be embedded into the participant’s research journey on all NIHR portfolio studies, where appropriate. For help with this contact: anne.kirby@nihr.ac.uk.
How often can I give it out?
PRES can be given out to each participant once, for each study they are taking part in.
If the participant is in multiple studies, they can complete a PRES for each study they are taking part in.
PRES for HEAL-COVID, PRINCIPLE, TIPAL and PANORAMIC studies
A number of studies are collecting the PRES Nationally, therefore please do not give the PRES out locally for participants on the HEAL-COVID, Principle, TIPAL and Panoramic studies.
The RDN has created two Recruitment Enhancement Tools based on the feedback from research participants. The aims of the documents are to give the researchers and research delivery teams a better understanding of the participant perspective.
If you require further information or assistance to deliver the PRES please contact anne.kirby@nihr.ac.uk or ann.rampling@nihr.ac.uk and we will do our best to help you.
