Description of Course: AP World History is designed to be the equivalent of a two-semester introductory college or university world history course. The course focuses on developing students' understanding of world history from approximately 1200. to the present. The course has students investigate the content of world history for significant events, individuals, developments, and processes in six historical periods, and develop and use the same thinking skills and methods (analyzing primary and secondary sources, making historical comparisons, chronological reasoning, and argumentation) employed by historians when they study the past. The course includes extensive reading assignments from a college level text, in-depth essay writing assignments, as well as college-level summative exams. Students should have a teacher recommendation to take this course. The entire course is designed with the expectation of students taking the AP national exam. Depending on the secondary institution and the student’s score, up to six college credits can be earned. It is recommended that students taking this course take the Advanced Placement (AP) National Exam at the end of the course.
