Description of Course: Chemistry is the study of matter, its composition, structure, and behavior. Basic content includes gaseous behavior, mole concept, formula writing, equation writing, nature of solutions, modern structure of the atom, and chemical bonding. The principles of energy, rate of reactions, and equilibrium are also studied. Laboratory investigations are an integral part of these courses and serve to clarify concepts.
Chemistry 1: Many abstract concepts will be investigated mathematically. Because of the quantitative approach, it is assumed that students who elect this course have solid skills in the areas of fundamental arithmetic operations, ratio and proportion, and solving linear equations. Topics include atomic theories, the periodic table, chemical formulas and equations, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, solutions and acid base chemistry.
