Description of Course: The Neshaminy School District’s elementary schools’ English/Language Arts programs are aligned to the PA Core standards. Elementary level K-2 grades place a strong emphasis on learning to read through explicit instruction of critical components that include phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency skills to develop literacy skills. Appropriate grade level instruction is designed to enhance independent reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Mentor texts are incorporated as a model for writing instruction in various genres. Students will incorporate skills through three parts: Word Work, Reading, and Writing. Students will master more complex phonetic elements and learn to encode and decode structural patterns. Comprehension and fluency skills will increase as they read longer complex literary and informational texts. Read-alouds will build vocabulary and prepare students to read more rigorous texts. Students will begin to use the writing process to write narratives, informational, and opinion pieces.
