Description of Course: Fourth grade social studies is taught throughout the year. In Civics and Citizenship, the importance of rule following and cooperation in school, home and community is emphasized. The structure of the government of Pennsylvania and the law-making process are also part of this year’s learning. Geography expands student understanding of geographic literacy. This not only includes map reading but also understanding the interactions between humans and the environment. History focuses on contributions which helped to create Pennsylvania’s unique history and culture. These include Native Americans, early settlers, Pennsylvania-born citizens, migrants, immigrants... Economics lessons teach about regional resources and economic forces. Pennsylvania’s diverse economic strengths include steel, agriculture and emerging green energy resources.
