Description of Course: The Neshaminy School District’s elementary schools’ English/Language Arts programs are aligned to the PA Core standards. At grade 3 a transition begins to move from learning to read to reading to learn. There will still be an emphasis on learning to read through explicit instruction of critical components that include phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency skills to develop literacy skills. Appropriate grade level instruction is designed to enhance independent reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Mentor texts are incorporated as a model for writing instruction in various genres.  Students will incorporate reading skills through theme-based short stories to extend their reading, thinking, and communication skills during Socratic discussions. Students will continue with their understanding of all phonetic elements and apply it in fluent reading of grade-level text. More complex authentic literary and informational texts will be implemented to increase comprehension skills. Vocabulary acquisition will increase through interactive reading of informational and literary pieces in context. Students will use the writing process to write longer more structured narratives, informational, and opinion pieces.
