Description of Course: The Neshaminy School District’s secondary English/Language Arts courses are aligned to the PA Core standards. Appropriate grade level instruction is designed to enhance the development of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking for each child. In the 10th grade there are four different levels: AP Prep English 10, Honors English 10, English 10, and Foundations English 10.
AP Prep English 10
AP Prep English 10 is designed for those highly motivated students who plan to take either of the Advanced Placement courses in eleventh and/or twelfth grade. This course follows the College Preparatory English 10 curriculum; however, instruction for students will be aligned to the Advanced Placement methodology. The course will introduce the techniques of reading, analysis, and writing integral to success in an Advanced Placement course. In addition, students will engage in a Fantasy genre unit.
Honors English 10
Honors English 10 provides instruction in reading, writing, and critical thinking skills with complex texts for motivated learners. Instruction and practice in critical thinking is provided through the study of genres, including novels, plays, short stories, poems, and essays. In addition, students will learn research skills to support thesis-based modes of writing. Speaking skills, grammar, and vocabulary are also taught within this course.
English 10
English 10 provides instruction and practice in critical thinking through the study of genres, including novels, plays, short stories, poems, and essays. In addition to a wide range of writing assignments, students will learn basic research skills to support thesis-based modes of writing. Speaking skills, vocabulary, and grammar are also taught within this course.
Foundations English 10
English 10 Foundations is a curriculum designed with an emphasis on skills and strategies that promote literacy. The course will include the reading of high interest literature through the study of genres, the writing of composition and the study of vocabulary and grammar. Students will engage in self-selective nonfiction articles weekly. This course offers more individualized instruction and focus on reading and skill development for students.
