Production updates
Data storytelling 15th October
During the data drivenness month, we mentioned that a data storytelling training will be organized within Production. Corne, Simon and Wesley have been working together on the content and format, so we are now ready to share more practical information!
Date: Tuesday October 15th
Time: 09:30-12:30
Location: on-site in Prismalaan
If you are interested and would like to participate, please inform your manager. It is expected from the participants to have basic experience and knowledge with data (Excel and Gsheet)
It will cover tips on data collection and retrieval, understanding data, finding the story behind the numbers, and presenting it in a way that resonates. It's perfect for anyone who wants to take their data skills to the next level without getting lost in the numbers.
Project SpaceSpacer
For those who don’t know yet: we are working on Project SpaceSaver. Project SaveSpacer is all about reducing the air we ship to customers. In W38 we adjusted the sizes of all MAO products. By doing this we try to minimize the number of DABS (boxes) we ship to customers and instead of a box pack their order in BAG. Besides reducing the air shipped per box we also see positive effects in:
😄 Customer experience: The customer order looks better, and products are not scattered loose in the box.
💰 Production costs: Line speed of boxes at MAO is 450 boxes per hour whereas bags are produced at around 1100 boxes per hour.
📦 Packaging costs: Costs per bag are significantly lower than the cost of a carton box.
📍 Results:
We saw a huge decrease in the number of boxes we ship. Usually, we ship around 3000 boxes per week and with the adjusted product sizes, we managed to shift around 500 boxes which is equal to 23 people working 1 hour (23 hours total), into bags which now take 23 people working for 20 minutes (7.5 total hours in total) 23 hours – 7.5 hours = 15.5 hours reduction. In the coming weeks, we will monitor all individual product sizes and maintain them.
Shortage of lockers
This week, complaints were raised again about the shortage of lockers at our DC in Bleiswijk. Over the past period the Facility Team has taken several actions. Unfortunately, this has not yet solved the problem. To solve this issue more permanently we have te following actions:
Effective immediately
A few additional lockers were placed in ' the Pier ' 3 weeks ago.
Last Thursday, 2 extra blocks of lockers were placed at the entrance in ' the Pier'.
3 blocks of lockers in de ladies area are turned around so that they can be used by women and men. This is done because we want to prevent man having to enter the womens changing room.
Next month
Deep clean of the lockers will be performed in October. All lockers will be released and cleaned. This will make unintentionally closed lockers available again to use.
During this deep clean defect lockers will be fixed as much as possible.
The deep clean will also be used to change all batteries so we have less frequent malfunctions.
In addition; with the coming cold making you bring more and thicker clothing to work, we realize the lockers are a bit small. The Facility Team is currently looking at ways to anticipate on this fact.
Side note: We have noticed a lot of lockers are broken open when the system does not work. We would like to ask anyone having issues with their locker to report it to our Facility Team. Often they can help you without having to break your locker.
Local Tech Roadshow
Earlier this week Corné and Guinio from the Ops-tech team visited the headquarters in Berlin for the first ever Local Tech Roadshow hosted and organized by Felix Klar, our International Director Analytics, Planning and Insights - Operations. They were joined by Anaïs, Iana and Mark from our Amsterdam team. During the Local Tech Roadshow each market presented the tooling landscape of the domains Logistics, Demand Planning & Procurement, Order Enrichment and Warehousing & Production
The goals of the Local Tech Roadshow was to:
1) create a better understanding for the Global team on why local teams have created local solutions instead of (directly) using a Global software solution. In the Benelux for example KanBan, DSL/DRL and PackControl were introduced to support the Warehousing processes until WMS 2.0 is ready for use as the current WMS package is lacking in areas such as internal move orders.
2) raise awareness of what local teams believe are roadblocks for implementing existing Global solutions. A Benelux example is replacing Bartender, our Local label printing software, with Lassy, the Global printing software. A roadblock for introducing Lassy is that it among other things does not support printing multiple labels per mealbox.
3) exchange knowledge and build a stronger alliance with other markets and the Global team. A great example is meeting the Senior Data Engineer from the UK team and learning about his experiences with software packages such as, Streamlit, Snowflake and Kafka topics. We even got some recommendations on data engineering books to read.
Overall the tech roadshow was insightful and we're looking forward to future international roadshows and cross-market collaborations.

Larry the Lime Safety Quiz
This month we don’t have a new Safety Tip, but a recap of all the previous Safety Tips, Safety Alerts and general safety rules in form of the Larry the Lime Safety Quiz!
The quiz is part of next week's Health & Safety week. On Monday 23-09 access to the quiz will be shared by email and QR codes will be hanging in the canteen / toilets. You can send in your answers until Friday 27-09 16:00u. The week after we will announce the winner!
We will declare the person with the most correct answers as winner and he/she will receive a limited edition gift!
If there are more persons with the same number of correct answers, we will look at the last question. A guessing question: the person who is closest to the actual number is the winner.
For the office employees the quiz will be organized as a Pub Quiz in the canteen of office on Friday 27-09 at 16:30h.
Do you know all the correct answers?
