Greenport High School’s Athletic Director, Brian Touissaint, has recently undergone a significant change moving his office from the third floor of the school down to the gym on the first floor. While the move was prompted by a request from Mr. Case to rearrange office spaces, the transition has come with both challenges and unexpected benefits.
A Change in Perspective
Moving from a third floor office with a window to a more centralized location in the gym has been an adjustment. “The biggest con is no window,” Touissaint noted. However, there is a silver lining: “It is nice having easy access to sporting events being in the gym.”
One of the biggest challenges of the move wasn’t necessarily adapting to the new space but rather the physical relocation itself. “The move itself,” Touissaint said, was the hardest part, as it required transporting and reorganizing everything from the third floor down to the first. Despite the logistical difficulties, he has been settling in well. “So far, so good,” he said when asked about the transition.
Impact on Workflow and Routine
While the new office hasn’t significantly changed his daily responsibilities, it has introduced a new challenge noise. “Not so much, but the extra noise from the gym,” he admitted when asked about how the move has affected his workflow.
Another adjustment has been reorganizing his space to fit the new setting. “Just setting stuff up and doing stuff differently than our old office,” he explained. Despite these minor hurdles, he has managed to maintain the same level of accessibility, as the number of people visiting his office has remained steady.
What’s Missed and What’s Gained
When reflecting on his old office, Touissaint acknowledged that he misses the convenience of being on the third floor. “It was nicer in the morning to teach on the third, and it was easier to bounce back and forth if needed,” he said.
However, the new space does have its perks one unexpected improvement is the addition of a private bathroom. “It’s nice having a bathroom in the new office,” he noted. With the final setup now complete, including the installation of a TV, the space is fully functional.
Looking Ahead
Despite the challenges, Touissaint hopes this move will be a permanent one. “Hopefully, it’s a permanent move- it was a lot of work coming down to this new office,” he admitted.
If he could change one thing about his new office, it would be simple: “Adding a window.” But overall, he has embraced the transition with a positive mindset.
When asked what advice he would give to someone in a similar situation, his response was clear: “I would say just roll with it. It’s easy to get comfortable with [new] routines, and it’s not the end of the world if you have to move. It can be a refresh moving into a new office.”
While moving office spaces can be an inconvenience, Touissaint has taken it in stride, making the best of his new location while continuing to serve Greenport High School’s athletic department.
