FIS supports a safe and healthy learning environment for all students. Through education and guidance, FIS shall support students to develop knowledge and understanding to enable them to make lifelong healthy choices regarding substance use, including, but not limited to, alcohol, nicotine, steroids, tobacco, drugs, and inhalants.
Through age-appropriate learning, students shall develop an understanding of the risks of substance use, with a focus on prevention. FIS is committed to positive engagement with students to ensure learning experiences meet the needs of students and reflect current risks and trends. Students shall be encouraged to speak openly, ask questions, and engage with trusted adults when they have concerns or need support.
Student use, possession, or distribution of these harmful substances on campus, on school transportation, on school trips, or at any school-sponsored events, is forbidden, even if this possession does not result in criminal liability under German law. Where disciplinary action is taken, it is done so with consideration given to the wider context and underlying causes of the behavior. Final decisions rest with the Head of School.
In situations where students seek assistance regarding substance use (or parents and friends seek assistance for a student), provisions shall be made for confidential counseling to those who seek advice as well as possible referral to professional help organizations.
The Student Handbook shall provide policies and guidelines that further establish the school’s commitment to educate and guide students about navigating issues surrounding substance use. The Policy Committee shall review the school’s substance use policy every two years and report any concerns or recommended actions to the Board of Trustees.
