English is the primary language of instruction. The school shall offer compulsory English in all divisions.
English Language Acquisition (“ELA”) instruction shall be available to students whose English language proficiency is developing and shall be offered at several proficiency levels within the Primary, Elementary and Upper School curriculum.
As the host country language, German shall be offered from Pre-Primary throughout the school at a sufficient number of proficiency levels to meet the educational needs of all students. In general, all students are expected to be enrolled in German language classes.
Students in Grades 6-12 may choose an alternative language acquisition course once they have reached German intermediate proficiency or met a minimum German proficiency requirement.
The study of other languages is encouraged and the school’s offerings fall within four categories:
Language Acquisition, offered and funded by the school as part of the core curriculum (current offerings are German, French and Spanish).
Language and Literature programs, which are offered as part of the school day program and are either funded by the school (such as German language and literature classes) or funded by parents. Languages offered are dependent upon enrollment. Language and Literature programs begin in Elementary through the IB Diploma Programme or the IB Career Programme, depending on demand.
School Supported Self-taught Literature courses, offered to IB Diploma Programme students and supported by the IB Diploma Coordinator.
Identity Languages, courses with both online-independent and face-to-face tutoring components supported by the Identity Language Coordinator. These courses may be Language Acquisition or Language and Literature courses.
