Elected Board Members
The six community-elected Board Members are elected by the parents or guardians of the students currently enrolled at FIS. Three such members are elected each year. These elected members may not be school employees, spouses or partners of school employees, or parents or guardians of any student receiving a tuition rebate. The elections occur annually in May with three candidates elected each year for two-year terms. The Nominating Subcommittee, consisting of at least five parents and chaired by a Board Member, shall select a slate of at least five candidates to stand for election to the Board of Trustees. Incumbent elected Board Members running for reelection automatically qualify for the election slate provided they expect to have children enrolled at the school for the entire 2-year term. Candidates may also be nominated by regular members of the Association without the participation of the Nominating Subcommittee if supported by the signatures of 25 regular members. As per the Articles of Association, all parents and legal guardians of current students, have one vote, up to a maximum of two per child enrolled in the school.
Faculty/Staff Board Member
One of the twelve Board Members is a faculty or staff member elected by the faculty and staff to serve a two-year term. The election for the faculty/staff member takes place biennially in May.
Appointed Board Members
The five appointed Board Members are selected by the then-current Board of Trustees no later than the May meeting to serve two-year terms. These appointed members may be parents or others with specific expertise. Two members are appointed in one year and three in the following year, in rotation. Appointed members are chosen, based on various considerations, from a slate of candidates that includes candidates recommended by the Trustees Committee. Considerations for appointment include the expertise required at the time and characteristics such as: respected, international, strong community contacts, balanced, creative, energetic, open-minded, and committed.
The Board of Trustees shall employ a systematic process for appointment and for identifying and evaluating potential new appointees to ensure a deliberate and well-considered selection of appointed members. The process, coordinated by the Chair of the Trustees Committee, shall include discussion of desired skills, diversity of perspectives, and consideration of previous involvement in the school community, such as prior service on Board committees or in parent-led groups. Typically, candidates for appointment and reappointment are expected to have children enrolled at FIS for the entire 2-year term.
