The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the school and consists of twelve members with equal voting rights. Six of the twelve Board Members are elected by the members of Association, who are the parents or guardians of students currently enrolled at FIS. Five of the twelve Board Members are appointed by the Board of Trustees. One Board Member is elected by the faculty and staff. Board Members are elected or appointed for two-year terms. Each June the newly formed Board of Trustees elects four Board Members to serve as Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer and Secretary, who comprise the Executive Officers (Vorstand) under the Civil Code (Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch) of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Board of Trustees operates in accordance with its Bylaws and policies, which stipulate the Board of Trustees’ responsibilities and conduct. This section of the Policy Manual includes a broad overview of the Board of Trustees’ responsibilities and conduct as set forth in the Bylaws.
The Board of Trustees exercises oversight over the management of the business and property of the school and is generally responsible for the integrity, viability, and continued existence of FIS. The Board of Trustees is specifically responsible for appointing the Head of School, establishing tuition and school fees, and ensuring the school fulfills its mission and upholds its beliefs. In addition, the Board of Trustees monitors the quality and relevance of the school's programs, oversees the management of the school's assets and protects their value, and ensures that FIS remains financially sound. The Board of Trustees also works with the Head of School and the Administration to provide leadership in developing the school's strategic plan and monitoring its implementation.
