The Board of Trustees operates five committees to support the Board of Trustees’ work and develop recommendations for Board of Trustees decisions. Each committee is chaired by a Board Member and Board Members are expected to participate in at least one, and up to three, committees.
Buildings and Grounds Committee
The Buildings and Grounds Committee shall, in cooperation with the Head of School and the Finance Committee, oversee and report on the operation and maintenance of the facilities and grounds of the school. The committee shall also routinely assess security and safety issues and oversee the school's environmental, health and safety policy. The committee shall provide leadership and guidance in all long-term capital improvements, expansions and replacement projects.
FutureEd Committee
The FutureEd Committee shall review the quality of the educational programs, ensuring that the school is, in accordance with its mission, providing each child with a challenging, broadly-based, international education. The committee shall consult and cooperate with the Administration, which is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the school.
Finance Committee
The Finance Committee shall monitor all financial matters concerning the school and shall ensure that its members understand the school’s general operating results and the conditions leading to such results. The Finance Committee shall inform the Board of Trustees of the financial viability of the school, financial constraints and recommend courses of action.
Policy Committee
The Policy Committee is responsible for the maintenance and updating of this Policy Manual and the Board’s Bylaws and periodic review of Administrative regulations, manuals, and handbooks. The committee shall make recommendations for policy changes to the relevant committee or directly to the Board of Trustees. The Policy Committee shall review any substantive changes to Administrative regulations, manuals, and handbooks to determine if any such changes should be brought to the attention of the Board.
Trustees’ Committee
The Trustees’ Committee is responsible for all activities connected with maintaining a strong, committed, and well-informed Board of Trustees capable of carrying out its tasks effectively and efficiently at present and in the future. The committee shall ensure, among other things, the proper communication of Board of Trustees activities to the wider school community and organize appropriate training and development programs for Board Members.
The Trustees’ Committee shall promote effective liaison with the parent teacher groups and communicate to the FIS community the role and activities of the Board of Trustees. The committee shall encourage possible Board of Trustees candidates to become involved in Board of Trustees and committee activities.
The Trustees’ Committee oversees the Nominating Subcommittee, which is responsible for recommending a slate of candidates for Board of Trustees elections.
Ad-hoc Committees and Task Forces
In addition to the above-listed Board committees, the Board Chair, with approval by the Board, may choose to form other ad-hoc committees, task forces or workgroups for specifically defined purposes at such times and for such duration as the Board of Trustees deems necessary.
Committee Guidelines
Committee membership shall not exceed twelve members. Subject to the approval of the Board, ad hoc groups may be formed under the leadership of an existing committee member if further expertise or support is needed. Subject to the committee chair’s assessment, community members are generally invited to serve on one committee for up to three years, which may be extended based on expertise and contribution. The committee chair will ensure that, upon joining a committee, new community members receive an orientation to the operation of the Board of Trustees and sign a confidentiality agreement. Failure to attend three consecutive committee meetings may be cause for removal from a committee.
The Board of Trustees actively solicits community members to serve on Board of Trustees Committees and encourages those who may be interested in serving to contact the Board of Trustees.
Each year the Board of Trustees shall review overall committee membership, including community involvement.
