Google Classroom Building the Panama Canal Question
How was the Panama Canal built?
After watching "Demolition, disease, and death: Building the Panama Canal - Alex Gendler," complete the TEDEd Think Lesson and then type a short answer to all eight questions.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uE_UuHRtXCY Apr 27, 2021 Discover what it took to build the Panama Canal, and how this colossal construction project changed the region. -- In the 19th century, the California gold rush brought thousands of settlers to America's west coast. But finding gold may have been easier than transporting it back east. The only hope for avoiding a grueling six month wagon journey was to travel the narrowest portion of the continent — the 48-kilometer Isthmus of Panama. Alex Gendler details the creation of the Panama Canal. Lesson by Alex Gendler, directed by Cabong Studios. But the Erie Canal was dismissed at first. New York politician DeWitt Clinton spent 10 years fighting to sell the project to a deeply skeptical public, and Presidents Jefferson and Madison refused to help fund it. Yet the canal quickly changed the geography and commerce of the young nation. Richard Schlesinger reports on the history of the Erie Canal, still celebrated in song as an example of American ingenuity. CBS Sunday Morning

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdYz5OO9Jgk Jun 17, 2015 The Panama Canal has taken another important step forward toward the completion of the Expansion Program as it begins to fill the lower chamber of its new Atlantic locks. During an initial phase of filling, which will take approximately five days, the Canal will gradually raise the water level within the lower chambers of the new locks, pumping in approximately 50 thousand cubic meters of water per hour from Gatun Lake. This will allow for the testing of the first gates. The same process will then fill the rest of the Atlantic sections of locks, reaching a water level of 27 meters above sea level. Tests and inspections are expected to take approximately four months. Learn more about this project at https://micanaldepanama.com/expansion The Panama Canal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDbmouti3pw Dec 17, 2014 The installation of the gates for the new locks of the Panama Canal successfully began today on the Atlantic side of the waterway. The steel gates are moved using self-propelled motorized wheel transporters (SPMTs) with more than 400 wheels each. The gate currently being installed is 10 meters wide, 30.19 in height and weighs 3,285 tons. In total, the new locks will have 16 rolling gates, eight in the Pacific and eight in the Atlantic.
