Make sure you know your entire speech so you can make eye contact. If you didn’t practice your full speech today, you’ll go tomorrow in class. Tuesday2/2 Finish practicing your entire speech. Monday1/25 Finish making your notecards if you have not done so already. Practice delivering the first half of your speech. Focus on speaking slowly and clearly, pausing effectively, and varying your intonation. All students will deliver the first half of their speeches on Wednesday or Thursday in class for a grade. Tuesday1/26 Make sure you know the first half and have practiced pausing, speaking slowing, varying your intonation, and making eye contact. Be prepared to give the first half of your speech tomorrow in class. Wednesday1/27 Practice delivering the first half of your speech. Focus on speaking slowly and clearly, pausing effectively, and varying your intonation. All remaining students will deliver the first half of their speeches on Thursday in class for a grade. Thursday1/28 Begin learning your entire speech and continue practicing the delivery of your speech. Half the class will go Monday and the other half Tuesday. Friday1/29 Work on memorizing your speech. Be prepared to practice giving your entire speech on Monday or Tuesday and to give your final speech on Wednesday, February 3rd. Invite your parents to come watch you via Zoom on Wednesday. Read in your IR book. Book tests are due on February 9 (if you're reading more than one book) and March 5 (for long books or second books). AP books are due by Friday, February 5.Week 19
Tuesday1/19 Based on the writing notes, my comments, the grading criteria, and your own ideas, write a final draft of your speech. Make sure you have a catchy hook, a strong thesis statement, clear body paragraphs that have topic sentences connected to your thesis, persuasive evidence, and a powerful argument. Add some power language. Due Thursday. Wednesday1/20 After you’ve made the main content changes to your speech, read it aloud a few times and make any final changes. Due tomorrow. Start learning your hook. You will recite your hook in class on Friday. Thursday1/21 Practice delivering your hook. As you learn your speech, remember to speak clearly and slowly. Don’t forget to pause at the end of each sentence and don’t just rush into the next line. Be prepared to deliver your hook in class tomorrow. Friday1/22 Read in your IR book. Thursday1/14 Based on peer editing suggestions, the grading criteria, and your own ideas, write a second draft of your speech. Make sure you have a catchy hook, a strong thesis statement, clear body paragraphs that have topic sentences connected to your thesis, persuasive evidence, and a powerful argument. Finish your second draft by the end of the period tomorrow. Friday1/15 Read in your IR book. First IR books are due by February 9, second or long books by March 5.Week 17
Monday1/4 In order to prepare for the speech contest and make an informed decision about which topic you want to research and speak about, read an article or two about both topics. 1. Read and annotate the Linda Monk article about "We the People." 2. Watch the Ted Talk by Carol Dweck about Growth Mindset and write down some notes about Dweck’s speech (about 10 minutes). Tuesday1/5 Continue researching for your speech and annotating your articles. Read a few articles from the Google Doc and then begin looking for your own articles. Please print and annotate articles or copy and paste them (along with titles, authors, and urls) into a Research Google Doc and annotate. You will earn points for researching based on me checking your articles and seeing your annotations.Practice reciting the first half of your speech today. Spend at least an hour practicing so that you're ready to recite the first half of your speech in class tomorrow. If we don't have in person school tomorrow, you will deliver your speech to me via flipgrid. You don't need to come to my zoom classroom today, just check Google Classroom for more updates tomorrow.
