Write an editorial expressing your opinion about the verdict of The People vs. Thomas Robinson. An editorial should express the who, what, why, where, and argue your opinion. Once you have stated the verdict and expressed your reaction to it, go through the trial witness by witness (and don’t forget about Atticus Finch’s closing argument) using the witness testimony to support your argument that the verdict was wrong (or right).
You might start out with something like:
Maycomb County: July 12, 1935
Late last night after hours of deliberation, the jury for The People vs. Thomas Robinson found the defendant guilty on all charges. This ridiculous verdict shows . . .
In your next paragraph, start with the first witness:
Prosecution attorney, Mr. Gilmer, first called Sheriff Heck Tate to the stand. Although Mr. Tate accurately described his actions on the day of November 21, the majority of his testimony was hearsay, merely repeating the lies of Tom Robinson’s accusers, Bob and Mayella Ewell. . .
Be sure to use specific evidence and to quote from the testimony of the witnesses and from the lawyers statements and questions to support your argument.
