Pre-writing
Choose one of the following topics, and begin brainstorming. Make a T chart or a Double Bubble diagram and list the differences and similarities between the two. Choose one or two of the most significant similarities and two of the most significant differences. Find quotations or specific examples for each of these and make an outline.
Prompts
1. Compare and contrast Beatty and Faber in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. How are the two characters connected? How are they similar? How do they work as a foil? How do the two characters see the world? How do they relate to other characters in the novel? How do they change throughout the novel? What do you think they symbolize? How do they affect Montag differently? What do you think Bradbury is trying to say about our society through these two characters? What symbols in the novel represent each one? Be specific and use direct quotations and specific examples.
2. Compare and contrast our society to the one that Bradbury describes in his novel, Fahrenheit 451. In addition to the historical similarities, discuss the problems in our society today that match or parallel the problems of the 451 society. Analyze what Bradbury is trying to say about our society today by writing this book. Remember that it was written in 1950 (only several years after WWII). What "predictions" did he make that have already come true by the present day? Explain whether you agree with Bradbury's message or not. Is TV an evil drug that will destroy our society, is it human nature that will destroy us, or is Bradbury jumping to conclusions? Make sure to support all of your opinions with direct quotations and specific examples. (This is the more challenging essay to organize and focus so do not use this topic unless you’re a strong write and want an extra challenge).
