Monday
2/5 Practice delivering your entire speech. Focus on speaking slowly and clearly, pausing effectively, and varying your intonation. Also practice making eye contact and gesturing. All students will deliver their entire speeches on Wednesday for the final grade.
Tuesday
2/6 Continue practicing the delivery of your speech. Practice a lot so that you’re confident tomorrow. Final speech performance is tomorrow, Wednesday February 7th.

2/7 English 9 - 12: No homework!
AP English: Read The Importance of Being Earnest tonight. Read carefully and annotate so that you’re prepared for a quiz and class discussion on Friday.
Thursday
2/8 English 9: Make flash cards and study for Vocabulary Quiz #1b.
English 10: Read to page ______ in Lord of the Flies.
English 11-12: Complete Vocabulary #1b on Google Classroom.
AP English: Finish reading The Importance of Being Earnest tonight. Read carefully and annotate so that you’re prepared for a quiz and class discussion tomorrow.
Friday
2/9 Read in your IR book. All Second Quarter IR book tests are due by March 2nd. Please attend the performance of The Importance of Being Earnest on February 11th if you can. The play begins at 4:00 and we will leave LVHS at 3:00.
Week 22
Monday
1/29 Practice delivering the first half of your speech. Focus on speaking slowly and clearly, pausing effectively, and varying your intonation. All students will deliver the first half of their speeches on Wednesday in class for a grade. If you’re reading more than on book for Independent Reading this quarter, schedule a book test for this week.
Tuesday
1/30 Continue practicing the delivery of your speech. Make sure you know the first half and have practiced pausing, speaking slowing, varying your intonation, and making eye contact. Be prepared to give the first half of your speech tomorrow in class.
Wednesday
1/31 Work on memorizing your entire speech. All students need to be prepared to give their entire speeches for a practice run through on Monday, February 5th.
Thursday
2/1 Continue working on memorizing your speech and practicing your delivery. Freshmen, you may earn extra credit in English if you can deliver your entire speech in class on Friday.
Friday
2/2 Continue working on memorizing your speech and practicing your delivery. Be prepared to give your entire speech in class on Monday. Start your new IR book or continue reading in your long one. All IR book tests are due by March 2nd.
Week 21
Monday
1/22 Based on the writing notes, my comments, the grading criteria, and your own ideas, write a final draft of your speech. Spend time on this draft because you’ll be more confident in giving your speech if you feel like it’s your best work. Final drafts are due on Wednesday.
Tuesday
1/23 After making all the major content changes to your speech, read your speech out loud. Add in power language, repetition, sentence variety, and varied word choice. You will hear it if you’re repeating a word too often. Make sure your speech is persuasive and sounds good before you hand it in tomorrow.
Wednesday
1/24 Work on memorizing the first page of your speech.
Thursday
1/25 Practice delivering the first ½ page to full page of your speech. Focus on speaking slowly and clearly, pausing effectively, and varying your intonation. All students will deliver at least the first ½ page in class tomorrow for a grade.
Friday
1/26 Finish reading your IR book if you’re reading more than one book. Book tests are due on Friday February 2 and Friday March 2. Practice delivering the first half of your speech.
Week 20
Monday
1/15 There is no school on today, but be sure to finish your outline if you didn’t get it finished in class on Fri.
Tuesday
1/16 Continue working on writing the first draft of your speech. Be sure that you have clear organization, strong evidence, persuasive writing, and an engaging hook. Slow down and explain clearly so the audience will be able to hear your brilliant points. If you’re going for the extra credit, finish your first draft tonight.
Wednesday
1/17 Finish writing the first draft of your speech. Make sure your draft is the right length for the speech you want to give (2.5 to 5 pages for a 5 – 10 minute speech). If you want to go for the extra credit, finish your second draft tonight.
Thursday
1/18 After writing response groups, use the peer editing comments, grading criteria, and your own ideas to write a second draft of your speech. Make sure you have some effective repetition, persuasive evidence, and power language. Read your draft aloud and make sure it sounds right before you hand it in.
Friday
1/19 Read in your IR book. Book tests are due on Friday February 2 and Friday March 2.
Week 19
Monday
1/8 Research and print out some articles for your speech. Be sure to read and annotate your articles. Bring everything to class so I can check your progress.
Tuesday
1/9 Continue researching for your speech and annotating your articles. Bring everything to class so I can check your progress.
Wednesday
1/10 Finish researching tonight if you can. Find the last few articles that you need and find the articles you need for your hook. Bring everything to class so I can check your progress.
Thursday
1/11 If necessary, finish your research tonight. Be sure that you have a good idea for your hook and that you have all the evidence you need to make a strong argument. You can begin on your outline—due at the end of the period tomorrow.
Friday
1/12 Finish putting your quotes into your outline for the speech if you haven't done so already. Read in your IR book. Book tests are due on Friday February 2 (if you're reading more than one book) and Friday March 2 (for long books or second books). Work on the first draft of your speech. First drafts are due on Wednesday (extra credit) or Thursday, January 18.
