What is Explanation Writing?
Explanation texts are non-fiction texts that explains how something works or why something happens. For example: why hurricanes occur or how a car engine works.
It is different to procedural texts, as they are usually a set of steps to make something.
Activity 1: Introduction

As a class, look at the Power Point and information below to identify the purpose and structure of an explanation text.
Review the Explanation Writing Pack below for writing ideas.
As a class, look at the PowerPoint and see if you can identify the key information in an explanation text.
Activity 1A: Seed Development/Writing Ideas Brainstorming
As a class or individually, create 2 lists of things that you could write an explanation report on.
List 1 would contain a list of ideas for HOW something works.
List 2 would contain a list of ideas for WHY something happens.
For example:
List 1: How does a telephone work?
List 2: Why does lightning occur?
Activity 2: Explanation Text Review
Learning intention: I can identify the purpose and features of a range of explanation texts.
As a class, read through and discuss the Explanation text on Frogs. Answer the questions below:
What makes this an explanation report?
What non-fiction language is being used?
What did you learn from this?
Remember when writing to consider the following:
Use present tense verbs.
Use time and sequence words to start a sentence.
Activity 7: Publishing Explanation Text
Learning Intention: I can access Google Classroom to use Google Docs to type up a final copy of my Explanation Text.
To publish your writing complete all the steps below.
Add a Title in large format writing.
Type work. Remember to use paragraphs!
Add a picture to add detail to your Explanation Text.
Remember to add your name to the Google Doc.
Ask your teacher to print a copy of your writing.
