Aboard the Ship "Alexander,"
Botany Bay, 21st January 1788
Dear Mother and Father,
I hope this letter reaches you, though I fear it may be some time before you hear from me again. It has been many months since I was taken from my home and forced onto this ship, and the journey has been harder than I could have ever imagined.
The days are long and the nights cold. The ship is crowded, and we live in constant discomfort. I’ve been confined to the lower decks, where the air is foul, and sickness has spread among us. Many of the other convicts are ill, and there’s little we can do to ease our suffering. The food is poor, and we often go hungry.
At last, we’ve arrived in a place called Botany Bay, but it is nothing like home. The land is unfamiliar, the heat unbearable, and I fear for what the future holds. The officers tell us this will be our new home, but there’s little here for us to look forward to. The soil is poor, and fresh water is hard to find. I wonder how I will survive in such a place.
I think of you often and wonder if you are well. I can only hope that you understand why I am here, though I never wished for this life. I miss the warmth of our home, and I long to return, though I know not when that might be.
Please think of me, and know that I am doing what I can to get by. I will write again when I can.
With love,
William
