Session 1: Earth and Space Nature's Fury Introduction
Learning Intention
We are learning about Earth Science.
Success Criteria
I understand the enduring understandings of our inquiry unit.
I can brain storm what I already know about Earth Science.
Tuning In
Discuss the Enduring Understandings of the Earth Science unit.
By understanding natural processes and human activity we gain a true understanding of how the Earth’s surface continues to change over time.
By improving our understanding of how changes to the earth occur over time helps prepare humans for survival.
Mini Lesson
Let's brain storm everything we know about the following key questions.
What is the earth surface?
How can the earth's surface change?
What is a natural disaster?
What is human disaster?
Activity
Students fill in their KWLH chart, that they know and what they want to know.
Session 2: Natural Disasters
Learning Intention:
We are learning about disasters.
Success Criteria
I understand what is a disaster.
I know what a human disaster is.
I know what a natural disaster is.
Tuning In
Mini Lesson:
Mind Map
Create a mind map filled with all of the scientific words related to natural disasters.
For example: destruction, devastation, survival, adapting, preparation, evacuation.
Learning Intention:
We are learning about Geological Disasters
Success Criteria:
I can define and explain what a Geological disaster is
I can understand how disasters are caused and by movements of the Earth's crust
What is a Geological Disaster?
A Geological Disaster happens when natural geological forces cause wanton death and destruction in an area. Such disasters can be triggered by a single major event or phenomenon or a combination of two or more natural or man-made forces acting together to result in such a disaster.
What does Geological mean?
The word Geology relates to the study of the earth's physical structure and substance.
Types of Geological Disasters
-Volcanic Eruptions -Earthquakes -Mass movement (Rockfall, avalanches, landslides)
Your task: Complete some research on one of the Natural Disasters we have researched today and you are going to record your information into your Natural Disasters Cube/ Octagon.
Year 3: Write the natural disaster as your title and then 2 facts that you have learnt.
Year 4: Write the natural disaster as your title and then discuss the process in which how the natural disaster occurs.

Learning Intention:
We are learning about Hydrological Disasters
Success Criteria:
I can define and explain what a Hydrological disaster is
I can understand how disasters are caused and how they are heavily impacted by the weather
I can understand how natural disasters have an impact on humans
What is a Hydrological Disaster?
A Hydrological disasters are described as a sudden and violent event caused due to the change in the quality, distribution or movement of water below the surface or in the atmosphere. In other words, Hydrological disasters are events caused by deviations in the normal water cycle and/or overflow of bodies of water caused by wind set up.
What does Hydrological mean?
The word Hydrological relates to the study of movement, distribution, and management of water on Earth and other planets. This includes the water cycle, water resources, and drainage basin sustainability.
Types of Hydrological Disasters
-General flood, storm surge/ costal flood. -Tsunamis -Mass movement (wet): (Rockfall, avalanches, landslides)

We are learning about Meteorological disasters
Success Criteria:
I can define and explain what a Meteorological disaster is
I can understand how disasters are caused
I can understand how natural disasters have an impact on humans
What is a Meteorological Disaster?
A Meteorological Disaster is caused by changes to the Earth's atmosphere. They are violent, sudden and destructive changes that occur towards an environment and are generally produced by changes to the weather.
What does Meteorological mean?
The word Meteorolgy relates to the study of the atmosphere and its phenomena, including both weather and climate.
Types of Meteorological Disasters
-Blizzards -Cyclonic storms -Tornadoes -Hailstorms
-Storms including tropical cyclones, extra-tropical cyclone, local storms
Your task: Complete some research on one of the Natural Disasters we have researched today and you are going to record your information into your Natural Disasters Cube/ Octagon.
Year 3: Write the natural disaster as your title and then 2 facts that you have learnt.
Year 4: Write the natural disaster as your title and then discuss the process in which how the natural disaster occurs.

Learning Intention:
We are learning about Climatological disasters
Success Criteria:
I can define and explain what a Climatological disaster is
I can understand how disasters are caused
I can understand how natural disasters have an impact on humans
What is a Climatological Disaster?
A climatological disaster is a major event caused by extreme weather or changes in the Earth's climate. These events can have severe impacts on people, animals, and the environment.
What does Climatological mean?
The word Climate relates to the usual or typical weather that happens in a place over a long period of time. Climate is different from weather because weather can change from day to day, but climate is about the long-term patterns we can expect in a particular area.
Types of Climatological Disasters
-Extreme temperature: heat wave, cold wave, extreme weather condition
-Drought/ wildfire: Forest fire/ land fire.
