Welcome to Year 11 Materials Technology! This course offers students an introduction to the principles, applications, and innovations in materials science and technology. Through hands-on projects, scientific inquiry, and practical applications, students will explore the properties of materials, their manufacturing processes, and their impact on society and the environment.
The course has a practical focus in the building, construction and associated trades areas. Students need to complete a number of practical projects in wood and metal, and complete theory modules to achieve the standards.
Pathway in to all metal trades, fitting/turning, welding, panel beating, plumbing, irrigation, motor trades, production engineering, farming, building, boat building, conservation and restoration work, civil engineering, electrical work, joinery, cabinet making, interior design, building inspection, architecture and teaching.
Studying Year 11 Materials Technology can lead to diverse career opportunities, including:
Materials Engineer: Research, develop, and test new materials for specific applications, improving performance and sustainability.
Manufacturing Technician: Operate machinery and equipment used in production processes, ensuring quality control and efficiency in manufacturing operations.
Product Designer: Use knowledge of material properties and manufacturing processes to design innovative products that meet consumer needs and market demands.
Quality Control Inspector: Inspect and test materials and finished products to ensure they meet industry standards for safety, reliability, and performance.
Environmental Engineer: Assess the environmental impact of materials and manufacturing processes, develop strategies for waste reduction and sustainable practices.
Students ideally have completed Year 10 Materials Technology. There may be exceptions to this, and a student must discuss their eligibility with the Head of Faculty.
Students will incur material costs, estimated at $160 for the year, which will depend on the materials chosen and projects undertaken. Please note that 50% of these fees must be paid by the end of Term One, with 100% to be paid in full by the end of Term Two.
Please note this is an estimate and may change with the cost of available timber.
Students taking this course will create 3 projects over the year and complete a range of unit standards.
The course is promoted and approved by the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation.
