There are 4 subjects offered at Year 13: Painting, Printmaking, Design and Photography. Year 13 Visual Arts is designed for students who are passionate about the arts and seek to deepen their technical proficiency, conceptual understanding, and personal artistic expression. This course is ideal for those considering further education or a career in the visual arts.
Introduction
Students will produce artwork in a chosen field (painting, design, printmaking, photography or sculpture). The student will incorporate research and analysis of recent and established NZ and international arts into their original work. A maximum of two art areas can be chosen – as two subjects. E.g. Painting and Photography.
Prerequisites
12 credits in Level 2 Painting, or by negotiation with Miss Carr.

Students can choose the subject matter for the External folio depending on their interest and ability.
Internal: 91446 Use drawing to demonstrate understanding of conventions appropriate to painting (4 Credits)
External: 91456 Produce a systematic body of work that integrates conventions and regenerates ideas within painting practice (14 credits)
Scholarship candidates will be at the discretion of Miss Carr.
In Painting the aims are to develop an awareness of different approaches to drawing and painting. The emphasis is on contemporary work. The second half of the year is spent on producing work for the three panel Level 3 External folio.
Cost
Approximately $110 for Painting. Please note 50% of this cost must be paid by the end of Term One with 100% paid in full by the end of Term Two.

This course can lead students in a number of directions. With Level 3 Art, students may go on to University or Polytechnic for degree or diploma courses. A career as an artist, or as an architect, designer, teacher, interior designer, hairdresser, 3D animator, video game designer, tattoo artist, florist, comic book artist, photographer, photojournalist - and many more areas require art or design qualifications or experience.

In Photography students will have the opportunity to develop their skills digitally manipulating images in Photoshop. Investigation of International and New Zealand artists will enable the development of ideas to be presented on the three panel Level 3 External folio.

In Printmaking different printmaking techniques are explored and developed by investigating International and New Zealand artists. A range of printmaking techniques must be presented on the three panel External Level 3 folio.

Approximately $120 for printmaking (you will be supplied with printmaking tools, wood, plates etc.)

In Design students will research, develop and present ideas in visual communication or illustration, through drawing and digital manipulation, based on existing design practice culminating in a three panel Level 3 External folio. In Design you can explore animation/character design, product design or branding and advertising.
