Health Studies is about taking action to improve the wellbeing of yourself, other people and wider society. This courses allow students to support personal growth, challenge thinking about what is fair and just, build resilience and explore issues, create learning pathways and develop skills for health promotion.
The Level Three course covers thinking critically and researching ideas on:
Underlying health concepts
Health issues such as mental health, drug use and youth resilience.
Different ways that people treat medical conditions
Ethical issues, opposing perspectives and the impact of this on well being
This NCEA course offers both UE Reading and Writing credits.
Evaluate health practices currently used in New Zealand (internal, 5 credits)
Analyse a contemporary ethical issue in relation to well being (internal, 4 credits)
Analyse a New Zealand health issue (internal, 5 credits)
Analyse an international health issue (external, 5 credits)
This course could lead into tertiary study and/or career opportunities including nursing, health promotion, psychology, health policy or information management, or in a role improving the effectiveness of patient treatment, working with Māori communities, wellness facilitators, and leadership roles.
Studying Health Studies can lead to a wide array of career opportunities. Some potential paths include:
