The course develops both theory and practical knowledge in Home Economics and forms a solid base for NCEA Level 1, 2 & 3 Food and Nutrition. Students gain an understanding of nutrition, cooking skills, food safety & hygiene and creating healthy food. It consists of three periods per week, one of which will normally be a practical session. An outline of some of the units that may be covered:
Kitchen safety and hygiene
Healthy eating: some everyday foods we eat, their nutrient content & their energy value
Macro- vs micro-nutrients
Energy-dense vs nutrient-dense food and drink
The ideal plate: understanding portions
Design a food truck and prepare food for invited guests
Cost contribution: Approximately $90 for consumable materials.
