In their most recent meeting, Student Faculty Congress made the transition from regular desk chairs to exercise balls official. The decision shocked many, as the pilot classrooms for the project were wildly unsuccessful. The switch was made after countless complaints of uncomfortability and back problems due to the traditional hard-back chairs. The switch to the new exercise balls should be a theoretical improvement for students, but how will it work in reality?
In an effort to gain support for their plan, SFC replaced the chairs in only a few classrooms with the hope that students would rave about their new seating arrangements. Initially, the chairs were implemented in Ms. Dudman’s 5th period calculus class, but proved to be disastrous to students’ ability to focus. Senior Sofia Meyer, a representative on SFC, initially was one of the main supporters of the plan, but changed her mind after the trial run in her calculus class. Sofia’s yoga ball slipped out from under her in the middle of a quiz, and not only did it disrupt the quiz, but it flew upwards and severely damaged Ms. Dudman’s smartboard projector. Adding insult to injury, fellow senior Ameen Kimdar was recording the incident on Snapchat, and the video is currently at a million views.
Ms. Dudman will have to wait three weeks for her projector to be replaced, and she is now one of the biggest lobbiers for hard-back chairs. She was seen last week at the Board of Ed meeting with a sign that said “End the Yoga Ball Epidemic” and gave a short speech addressing the Board about the disaster that occured in her room.
It’s safe to say that SFC has to go back to the drawing board on this idea, and maybe come up with a better solution for students’ back problems.
