The evening started with a silent march, and was wrapped up by the words of a survivor of sexual assault. The survivor was a member of our Croton community and while she shared her story of survival, the message she wanted people to take away from her story was a simple one: be kind to one another because you don’t truly know what people are going through. Her message had clearly resonated with the audience, and one person even came to me after the event and told me that the speaker had changed her life. The evening was memorable, and evenings like these are what will ultimately change the culture that allows sexual and domestic violence to continue.
Take Back the Night is proof that CHHS is working towards a better culture. A more respectful culture, and a safer culture. The voices of students who want to create change are not being silenced; they are being amplified. Take Back The Night is an event that will have an impact for years after current students graduate, and this is how change will happen.
