As most have heard, the United States Senate has introduced and unanimously passed the Sunshine Protection Act. Three days ago the bill was introduced to the House of Representatives and was referred to the Committee on Oversight and Reform. During a committee work session, Representatives Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Jim Cooper (D-TN) introduced a bipartisan amendment to the bill. This amendment adds that the Sunshine Protection Act will not only stop us from turning back our clocks, but will abolish the social construct of time.
The committee approved the amendment with all but one voting in favor. The sole dissenter, Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA), claimed “This amendment will hurt the overall efficiency of society.” In response, members of Congress said the amendment will help improve efficiency by having people run on a schedule that’s best for them, not one determined by the location of the sun. “We believe that it’s not up to the government to tell people when it’s time to get up,” said Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC).
The bill is scheduled to be voted on in the House of Representatives within the next week, according to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer. Much speculation about the passage of this bill remains, although no member of Congress other than Rep. Porter has publicly spoken against the bill. Speculators assume it will easily pass in the House and a vote in the Senate for President Biden to then sign, although the timeline of this is unclear, because an unknown overzealous public servant removed Congress’ scheduling and agenda planning tools from Congress systems, presumably in anticipation of the bills’ eventual success.
