The Blue Pig ice cream shop is a Croton icon. Going on a Friday night for a cone of Blue Pig M&M is a right of passage for all Crotonites, but unfortunately its 25 year existence will be coming to an end this April. The owner, Lisa Moir, announced this week that she has sold her business. Moir bought the Blue Pig 12 years ago, and since then transformed the shop into an award winning certified green business well-known across the state for it’s unique gourmet flavors. However, she had been concerned with the health impact of her business. Therefore, she decided to sell the business for a frozen vegetable distributor.
Joyless’ Fine Frozen Foods has been a family run business since 1936 that packages and distributes frozen fruits and vegetables. The CEO Glen Joyless told the Times that “[he is] excited to be part of the Croton community and to add a dash of health to everyone’s day.” Joyless claims he will attract much of the same clientele: “Lots of people don’t know this, but frozen edamame beans straight out of the package are as good as any ice cream. Why would you want a salted caramel ice cream sandwich if you could be sucking on a chunk of frozen creamed spinch instead? The store plans to open in May with just prepackaged products, but hopefully this summer they will be able to sell their frozen vegetables and fruits by the cup. Joyless says they plan to paint the building pea green to match their logo and graphics.
The Croton Mom’s Blog is excited for this new business that will provide a healthy alternative frozen treat for their kids this summer. On the other hand, youngsters and ice cream fans aren’t so happy with this change. Croton Harmon High School junior Sofia Meyer says “I have been going to the Blue Pig my whole life, and especially this year with all that has been going on, I could always count on Lisa’s aztec hot chocolate ice cream for some comfort. I just don’t think frozen corn will bring me and my peers the same joy”. This is the end of an era for sure, but Crotonites should have an open mind. Maybe frozen vegetables can be just as refreshing as an ice cream cone!
