With the pandemic raging more than ever, and the weather getting colder and colder it is difficult to find fun and safe activities to do in and around town. Here are some safe and cheap/free things you can do with your friends and families.
Pick up rollerblading or skateboarding
Rollerblading and skateboarding are fun new skills that can be done safely with friends almost all year around. If you love to ski or just love sporty adventure, rollerblading is a great way to fill your time. Pick up a pair for a good price at the sports attic or on an online consignment shop. Go to the landing or try on the roads near Sunset Park.
Do an outdoor cookout with your friends
Although we can’t be inside each other's homes to cook and eat together, there are still safe ways to prepare and enjoy meals with friends. Make grilled cheese on an open bonfire or grill, and enjoy the meal ‘en plein air’.
Go outdoor ice skating
Outdoor ice skating is another athletic activity that can be done safely with friends. Bear mountain skating rink is open for 5 dollar sessions. In a few weeks time, Kaplain’s pond on Lounsbury Rd. will be frozen and ready for pond skating. Play a pickup hockey game or just skate around. Always make sure that the ice is thick enough. Pond skating is a great way to get outdoors in the cold.
Take up a net sport
For those of us who like ball sports but can’t play due to Covid or the cold, platform tennis and soccer tennis are great competitive sports that can be done throughout the winter. Platform tennis courts in Yorktown and Tarrytown have lights and can be played in almost all weather (excluding the snow of course). Soccer tennis or tennis can be played on the Croton tennis courts socially distanced anytime.
Take a paddle
Who says that one can only go kayaking or canoeing in the summer? Bundle up in super warm clothes and watch the seasons change on the Croton River.
