2. Lesson overview

Mr James begins the mornings science lesson by engaging the children in thinking back on vocabulary that they used in the previous lesson, related to learning about sound. He uses actions to remind them about words that relate to the topic they had been working on. He then proceeds to play a memory game, whereby the children have to work out which word is missing. This is followed by the children considering whether we 'can change the way we hear?' To consider this further Mr James plays a You-Tube clip about how other animals hear differently. The children are then invited to play a game of bat and moth. Here the bats (blindfolded children) have to try and catch moths (children making a slight noise). After the game the class is divided into thirds and the children are invited to do one of three tasks. That is, to create devices, from junk, which amplify, or insulate sound, or build something that improves our hearing. There is then over an hour of child-led activities (building their hearing devices) and testing their effectiveness (that is, measuring the intensity of sound). Once completed the class celebrate their amplifiers and insulators. Finally, the hand-crafted sound improvers are also demonstrated when the children, who created them, are invited to play another game of bat and moth.
