The children are challenged by Miss Charnock to consider which one (between a set of Christmas lights, a car and a mobile phone) is the Odd One Out.

After the children think individually, and then share their ideas with a peer Miss Charnock invites the students to share their thoughts with the whole class. See section 4.iv to find out the pupils various explanations as to which is the odd one out.

During these exploratory conversations Miss Charnock acknowledges how important it is to have a classroom ethos that welcomes all ideas but also one that focuses on the scientific concept being taught.
