2. Lesson overview

The lesson begins with Mrs Pottle using a fictional story about bats and sound. The children are then guided through a visual map of the narrative. Each child then creates their own speedy art drawing, illustrated on the front cover of a booklet. Mrs Pottle asks the children questions to bring into the classroom a rich vocabulary that describes a variety of things the bats do in the story. She then scaffolds for poetry so that the children can transform aspects of the story into a poem. They perform their poems and then engage in an imaginary telephone conversation, in-role, to re-tell a grandparent the story. Finally, the children proceed to engage in practically making different kinds of sounds by using a range of materials and resources in a variety of ways.
