3.iii. The class investigation

Mr McAllister invites the children to gather around him, at the front of the classroom.

The original class investigation is from the BBC's Terrific Scientific series (click here). The lesson was filmed prior to March 2020, since then there has been a global pandemic. Children, however, could still count the number of taste buds using pictures of tongues (see photographs below).

You could also invite children to take a photograph of their own tongues at home and print these pictures out. The taste buds could still be counted using various pieces of equipment as demonstrated by Mr McAllister (e.g. magnifying glasses, iPads, torches and card with small holes in).

Did you know that cats only have a few hundred taste buds and dogs have about 1700? Compared to that of about 9000 taste buds for each human! Can you find and count the cats and dogs taste buds on the photos below?
