Recycling Bins

You'll notice that on most blocks in the city you can find several containers for various types of garbage collection. In people's homes, they separate their recycling and then bring each type of item to a specific bin. What goes where?

WHAT GOES WHERE?


BROWN CONTAINER

For: Organic waste (food leftovers and gardening)

Where does it go? ecoparks as compost and gas

% of total waste we produce: 36%

How to dispose: use compostable bags.


YES: food leftovers, dried fruits, egg and seafood shells, corks (made of actual cork), coffee grounds (not plastic pods), dirty kitchen paper towels and napkins, plants

NO: floor sweepings, hair, animal waste (goes in grey), paper or cardboard (goes in blue)


YELLOW CONTAINER

For: Plastic containers, metal cans and lids, "briks" (the milk and juice containers in Spain). You don't need to rinse before you bin these products. 

Where does it go: separating plant and then to recycling centers

% of total waste we produce: 12%

How to dispose: use a normal plastic bag or deposit items on their own (no bags).


YES: plastic containers (bottles, bags, yogurt containers, etc), beverage and preserved food cans, metal lids, alumninum foil and cling film, plastic trays

NO: toys, CDs, or plastic containers from dangerous products (these must be taken to a “Punt Verd”)


GREEN CONTAINER

For: glass (empty, dry and remove lids)

Where does it go? recycling plant

% of total waste we produce: 8%

How to dispose: deposit glass on its own (no bags).


YES: glass bottles and jars

NO: broken kitchen glasses, mirrors, pottery, dishes, lightbulbs, fluorescent lightbulbs (these go to a "Punt Verd")


BLUE CONTAINER

For: paper and cardboard - remove staples, paper clips, spiral bindings, etc.

Where does it go? recycling plant

% of total waste we produce: 18%

How to dispose: deposit items on their own (no bags unless it's a paper/cardboard one).


YES: cardboard boxes, newspapers, magazines, notebooks (no spiral), paper bags, sheets, gift wrap

NO: used napkins and kitchen roll (this goes in organtic), used pizza boxes (unfortunately this goes in grey).


GREY CONTAINER

For: everything else

Where does it go? ecoparks where they revise general waste before processing

% of total waste we produce: 27%

How to dispose: regular waste bags.


YES: cigarette butts, feminine hygiene products, floor sweepings, cotton, hair, used pens and pencils, animal waste   

NO: waste that can go to other containers


Most of the products you buy at the supermarket will have a small printed icon that matches the color of the container where you can discard it. Be mindful of different types of packaging (carton + plastic, for example) as you'll need to separate the packaging and dispose of each part in the correct bin.

PUNTS VERDS

PUNT VERD (Green Point)

These are small recycling centers located in each neighborhood where you can take more complicated items for recycling.

What to bring to Punt Verd?
Clothing, shoes, printer cartridges, broken electronics, cooking oils, cables, tires, sprays and aerosols, cosmetics, batteries, paint, lightbulbs, coffee capsules (in the pods)

Don't bring:
Sanitary napkins, organic matter, floor sweepings, broken furniture. 

OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST

Batteries: There are special containers in supermarkets, shopping centers and some stores to collect used batteries

Clothes and footwear: Roba Amiga, is given to those in need. These are orange containers often seen in parks and other public spaces. Find one near you here.

Medicine and Medical material: pharmacies will collect leftover medications - don't throw these away!

Furniture: Each street has a collection day that large items are left out from 8-10pm, check the day for your street
