Volunteering
The Culture of volunteering in Spain
Would you like to give back to the community in Barcelona while you're abroad? Volunteering is a great way to meet locals and make new friends.
Keep in mind that volunteering in Spain isn't as prevalent as in the United States. Soup kitchens, for example, are run by the state and won't allow volunteers without being contracted by a public company with clearance and a food preparation license. Many homeless shelters do not allow the public in - only those who are employed by the agency. And any position in which you are working with kids requires an official criminal background check.
However, don't let this discourage you if you're hoping to volunteer while in Barcelona! The more you are able to commit to volunteering (for example, coming twice a week throughout the semester vs. just a one day thing) the more options you will have. Reach out to organizations and ask what they need and we're sure you'll find a great fit!
