DRESS CODE
In general, work attire is much more casual in Spain than in other countries. Most likely, you won’t need to wear anything too formal. However, Spanish people take pride in their appearance, and while they may be dressed casually, they're always well dressed.
Once you’re placed in your internship, you’ll receive more specific dress code instructions that are specific to your company. However, here are a few tips to get started, based on what kind of internship you'll have:
Very Casual - Typically only applicable for fitness or performing arts internships. Nice sweatpants, quality leggings, and track pants are all good options! It's best to wear a casual shirt that you can move in. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, as you'll likely be moving a lot throughout the day. Depending on your internship, you may want to bring a change of clothes to put on after you're done for the day or if you decide to use the shower facilities.
Casual - Typically applicable for start ups and education internships. You can wear any jeans, khakis, or pants without holes. Casual dresses and skirts are perfect; just make sure they're to the knee or longer! Any casual shirt is fine (as long as it's not strapless or cropped) paired with any footwear.
Business Casual - Typically applicable for any marketing, social media, or similar internships. Opt for long, nice pants without rips or holes, and (most likely, depending on the company) no jeans. Casual button down shirts or polo shirts are perfect. If you wear a skirt or dress, make sure it’s to the knee or longer. Opt for close toed shoes and avoid sandles.
Formal - Typically applicable for finance or law internships. It's best to wear dress pants or slacks with a button down shirt. Knee length or longer neutral colored dresses or skirts are also a good option. Although the dress code might be formal, heels aren’t necessary!
A few things to remember, whatever the dress code may be at your internship:
Be sure to avoid having any rips or holes in your pants.
No spaghetti straps or crop tops.
Shorts and skirts should be knee length or longer.
It will be very hot during the Barcelona summer and not all offices have air conditioning, so it’s best to wear layers that you can take on and off throughout the day!
