February is Black History Month. In order to recognize and celebrate the contributions and achievements of African-Americans throughout our history, we will highlight an extraordinary individual each morning. Today we profile Dr. Marin Luther King. Martin Luther King Jr. was an African-American clergyman who advocated social change through non-violent means and shaped the American civil rights movement of the 1950’s and 1960’s. King was the pastor of a Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, where he organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott, becoming a national figure. On the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in 1963, King organized a march on Washington D.C. that drew 200,000 people demanding equal rights for minorities. Upon signing the Civil Rights Act of 1964, President Lyndon Johnson credited King with helping to achieve the most significant federal legislation regarding civil rights since Reconstruction.
