Did one of your students, faculty or staff members do something wonderful this past month? Please take a moment to recognize this act by nominating him/her for student of the month or faculty/staff member of the month. We need nominations for students from 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade. Please submit all forms in blue or black pen only! Just as students deserve to be recognized, teachers and staff do as well. Please take a moment to stop by any Assistant Principal’s Office to pick up a form to nominate a teacher or staff member who has had an impact on you in a positive way. Please drop off all nominations to the 1 West Office.
February is Black History Month. In order to recognize and celebrate the contributions and achievements of African-Americans throughout our history, we will highlight an extraordinary individual each morning. Today we profile W.E.B. DuBois. W.E.B. DuBois attended Harvard University and in 1895 became the first African-American to receive a doctorate from the school. He became a university professor, a prolific writer and a pioneering social scientist on the topic of black culture. He expressed his views in his famous 1903 book The Souls of Black Folk. In 1909 he was a founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), an organization promoting progress and social equality for blacks. DuBois continued for decades as a strong public voice on behalf of African-Americans.
Today is the final day of National School Counseling Week. The school counseling staff, like everyone in our school, is here to make a difference in your life. We want to help you learn wise lessons, achieve your goals and become better human beings. As Dr. Seuss says, “Be sure when you step, step with care and great tact. And remember that life’s a Great Balancing Act. And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed!” Our door is always open and we are ready to help you. Nothing is too big or small for us. Advocate, guide, adviser, mentor, teacher, all of these things are what our school counselors and social workers are. Once again, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank our guidance counselors: Ms. Brenner, Ms. Brewer, Ms. Crocetti, Ms. DeNunzio, Ms. Ericksen, Ms. Garner, Ms. Joseph, Ms. Nardone, Ms. Nunziata, Ms. Scanlon and Ms. Siebert and our social workers: Ms. DeFeo, Ms. Jumper, Ms. Kristiansen, Ms. Larson and Ms. Searing for all they do. Thank you for celebrating National School Counseling Week with us. Have a terrific and safe weekend.
