February is Black History Month. In order to recognize and celebrate the contributions and achievements of African-Americans throughout our history, we will highlight an extraordinary individual each morning. Today we spotlight Maya Angelou. Maya Angelou had been a dancer and stage actress and she was active in the civil rights movement in the 1950’s and 1960’s. In 1969, she published I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which was nominated for a National Book Award and made her a symbol of pride for African-American women. In 1972 she was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for a collection of poetry. Since then, Angelou has continued teaching, writing, acting, producing, and recording. In 1993 she became only the second person to read a poem at a presidential inauguration.
